The son of Dartmouth College professor, John Moffat Mecklin, John M. Mecklin was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. in 1918. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1939 and worked as a newspaper reporter until 1942. From 1942 to 1945 he was a war correspondent in North Africa and Western Europe, and from 1945 to 1947 he was a foreign correspondent in Italy.
